Feminist Tech Card Deck

Superrr Lab

A set of work-in-progress guidelines for feminist tech policy-making and technology creation. The guidelines consist of 12 principles for feminist technology, which range from the intrapersonal to the global, and which are accompanied by a card deck and six essays envisioning more just technological futures.

The Feminist Tech principles are a set of guidelines for tech policy-making and technology creation. They are intended as responsive work-in-progress that reflect the evolving nature of our digital world. The principles were drafted in a collaborative process between the team at SUPERRR Lab and a group of activists, policymakers, writers, designers, technologists, researchers, and educators, that advocate for digital rights and the rights of marginalized groups.

Each principle is supported by insights into the status quo, why the principle is necessary, and a good practice example of people or organisations already working on the topic in a feminist way. To ensure the topics are tangible and accessible to a wide audience, they’ve turned to storytelling and future narratives for some of the principles, with the aim of expanding further.

To add a playful element to the feminist tech principles we've developed a card deck that serves as a conversation starter. It’s intended to help people to explore the principles, engage in discussion with others and develop their own narratives and principles.

Each card features a quote and questions connected to the 12 principles. The card deck can be used in groups – where people pull a card and then share the answers to their questions with the other players – or it can also be used alone. QR codes on the deck guide users to more info on that principle, as well as hands-on good practice examples for inspiration. The deck contains blank cards for additional principles and questions.

The Feminist Tech Card Deck is created by Superrr Lab and contributors of the Superrr Community. Superrr Lab develops visions and projects with the goal of creating more equitable futures. They research technologies, build networks and shape new narratives. Superrr is playful, visionary and feminist.
