HOW CAN WE BREAK DOWN TABOOS?

You Beaut, on the way into Copeland Park and in the gallery’s toilets, is an installation made from icing and sweets that represents menstruating uteri. The ‘utes’ in this series represent a blood conditions that are commonly experienced by local women. The artworks are a defiant answer to cock and balls graffiti, and an ironic angle on a little talked about fact of life. Can they help break the ice?

You Beaut has been informed by conversations with Yacoub Khalaf, Medical Director of the Assisted Conception Unit at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and Director of the Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) Programme. Yacoub Khalaf is a recognised international expert in management of infertility and assisted conception.
